The basement of the United Methodist Church could best be described by the rustic wooden sign in the corner, removed from all the tables, the chairs, the kitchens, the laughs and the camaraderie.
It sits on a wooden table, existing outside the meals, the greetings and the warmth, narrating the scene before it to those who do not yet understand. It reads: “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,” Acts 2:46.
There it sits, narrating the congregants and volunteers of the, as they, with smiles on their faces, welcome those, young and old, rich and poor, who braved the enduring frost of winter for the comfort of a warm meal and friendship.
It’s a Thursday, and it’s 5 p.m., which means it’s the weekly Community Kitchen at the church, and on this particular night, it concludes meal number 52. Tomorrow, Thursday Feb. 2, will be the celebration of one year’s worth of meals, a total of 6,088 through January.
