A drive through the residential streets of Hampton this week could have been a little tricky due to patches of road with almost an inch of jagged ice on them. Residents reported themselves and their cars slipping in parts of town due to such instances of ice, which, thanks to the cold weather, has taken a significant amount of time to dissipate.
A snowstorm that came Friday, Dec. 23, brought down approximately four inches of wet snow that quickly covered the roads, Friday morning. Throughout most of the afternoon, the Iowa Department of Transportation listed most roads within the state as partial-to-completely covered, with several no-tow zones established.
Public Works Director for Hampton Doug Tarr explained that crews were out on both Dec. 23 and Christmas Eve, until around 2 a.m., including Tarr himself.
“We were pushing thick, wet and heavy snow and by the end of it, we were pushing water,” Tarr said. “We don’t have a way to get rid of water.”
