The corridors of the Hampton Public Library were a little noisier than usual last Wednesday, April 11, as local citizens visited to celebrate National Library Week with the staff.
Patrons at the library got a special treat at 2 p.m., when O.J. Fargo, of Creston, performed a single-person reenactment of a Civil War soldier passing through on his way home.
Fargo educated the crowd on the background, recruitment, training and lifestyle of soldiers from Iowa in the Civil War.
“A lot of people don’t know that the governor (of Iowa) and the president at that time were good friends,” said Fargo, “and thousands of Iowans responded to the first call for volunteer soldiers.”
