Hampton native wins volunteer award

Hampton native Steve Kruse will be the first to admit it's hard to leave him without words, but that's what happened when he was named KIMT's (Mason City) Volunteer of the Month for March.
Nominated by Mason City Chamber of Commerce Membership Director Colleen Frein, Kruse was recognized for his service with a variety of Mason City volunteer organizations including the Chamber Ambassadors, the Elderbridge Alliance Board, Kiwanis and more.
To surprise Kruse with the recognition took a little bit of deception. Kruse said he was informed his duties as a Chamber Ambassador were needed on the third floor of the Chamber of Commerce building for a ribbon cutting for a new business. Notified on a Monday that the ribbon cutting would take place on Wednesday, Kruse initially questioned the suddenness.
"But they said they wanted to include the new business on the March newsletter, so I thought that made sense," he said.
