A Hampton dog had his day last February as Zulu, a Rhodesian Ridgeback owned by Richard and Kathy Allbee, ventured out to New York to compete in a prestigious dog show.
Sometimes known as the African Lion Dog, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a breed of dog developed in South Africa that get their name from the patch of fur that runs along their backs in the opposite direction of the rest of their coat. Fast and intelligent, the breed is used to hunt lions, boars, and bears. Domestically, law enforcement frequently uses the breed to track escaped prisoners, however Zulu is generally just on the hunt for dog treats from his owners for being a good boy.
"They're very quick and very smart," said Allbee. "They have a lot of interesting traits."
The Allbee family fell in love with the breed many years ago when Richard got one as a Christmas present for his wife. Since then, the Allbees have opened their home to several more over the years.
