Hampton council takes tour of city’s crumbling infrastructure

The Hampton City Council took a fieldtrip around town during their workshop on Monday to examine solutions to problem areas in the city’s streets, sidewalks and alleys.
While it was noted that these stops weren’t necessarily the worst areas of Hampton, they did provide an example of the kind of situations that need to be addressed.
The first stop on the tour was at Second Avenue Southwest and Fifth Street Southwest, where the group looked at a “frost boil,” which happens when moisture in the ground freezes and expands, pushing on the asphalt from below until it reaches its breaking point. The result is a shattered road on an unstable foundation.
