H-D High School ponders trimester system

Hampton-Dumont High School is in the process of evaluating its eight-period schedule, according to Principal Steve Madson, with the option of a trimester schedule as a replacement.
H-D currently runs on a semester schedule of eight, 42 minute-periods, with a 50 credit requirement for graduation. At the district’s School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) meeting, last week, Madson cited the high school’s scores for College and Career Readiness on 2016 Iowa School Report Card. The school earned a 49.2 percent on the section, above the state average of 39.8 for high schools.
“I don’t think 42 minutes is long enough to get the kind of region we want,” Madson said.
Madson explained that should students continue education through vocation, two-year or four-year degree program, their schedules do not consist of six-eight classes per day.
