Words can be hard to come by in the wake of great loss, however one phrase comes to mind when referring to Kevin and Julia Barz.
“They were one-of-a-kind,” said Terry Carr, who coached for the Youth Sports Foundation, through which Kevin helped implement a tackle football team. “They were just a great, dynamic couple.”
To use the past tense when referring to Kevin and Julia seems more than surreal to Carr and those who knew them best. Kevin and Julia were killed on Friday, July 5 after a car struck their vehicle on Highway 65 near Iowa Falls. As the reports began to circulate on social media pages and news outlets, a sense of shock began to set in on the Hampton-Dumont-CAL community.
“It was a just a feeling of disbelief,” said former H-D football coach Dan Aalbers, who worked with Kevin to start the tackle football program for fifth and sixth graders in the fall of 2007. “It was really hard to hear.”
Kevin and Julia were known and well-respected for their involvement in Hampton-Dumont athletics and community sports in general. Aalbers fondly remembers Kevin’s willingness and enthusiasm towards beginning the tackle football program for fifth and sixth graders.
