H-D board hears band needs; South Side space concerns Monday

The Hampton-Dumont music department is hoping a little unconventional thinking will spur excitement in the band program among the school’s Hispanic population.

     High school band Director Chris Sauke and 6-8 grade band Director Joan Philgreen met with the board of education Monday night and presented their plan to start a mariachi band at H-D. The duo felt adding the traditional Mexican instrumental ensemble would help reach demographics not typically represented in the school’s music program. Both Sauke and Philgreen explained H-D’s Hispanic students might be more apt to join if there was a group dedicated to playing familiar music.       

     “It’s something for the kids to do after school,” said Sauke. “It would solely be a fun activity to get together.”
