Despite muddy, frigid and foggy conditions last week, Franklin County cemented itself a spot on the Freedom Rock Tour, with Coulter being the designated location.
On Tuesday, Feb 28, Dave’s Crane, Union, picked up the mammoth boulder and transported it down Interstate 35, at the speed limit, placing it on the outskirts of Coulter, East of Main St. The rock will serve as a canvas for artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II to paint a “thank you” memorial for veterans who served in the military.
The Freedom Rock Tour began with a single rock, weighing over 60 tons, in 1999, which Sorensen repainted every year as a thank you to veterans. According to Sorensen’s website, the idea came from the movie Saving Private Ryan. He later decided that for the ensuing summers, he would travel about the state, through all 99 counties, painting murals on rocks to spread the attitude of thanks to the veterans in the state.
