Franklin County Relay for Life honorary co-chairs share cancer survival stories

Landon Tollefson
I share this story with you all today not just to tell you about Landon, but to spread the awareness of pediatric cancer. Some of the things shared in his story are detailed, and may be tough to read. We share these things to let people know what the reality is.
Our son, Landon Tollefson, was just two-years-old when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, or AML. Over the winter of 2015, he had been very sick, and seemed to stay that way. Landon suffered from many colds, ear infections and respiratory illness. My husband Jerry and I had started taking turns leaving work and staying home with Landon as he battled his illnesses weekly. At one point in time, we were making appointments to the clinic on Monday mornings because we knew by the end of the week, Landon would need to be seen for whatever he would end up sick with. By the end of the winter, we lost count how many different antibiotics he had been on and how many times he had been sick.
Rewinding back to December 2015, Landon's daycare called me at work, and said they found a suspicious lump near his groin, and thought we should come get him. I left work and took him into the Mason City ER. After running a few tests they said it was just a swollen lymph node, and that he needed more antibiotics for another ear infection he had developed. No follow ups were scheduled, and nobody gave it a second thought.
