Franklin County Farmer’s Market meeting discusses attendance hurdles ahead of 2017 season

     A community meeting was held last week about approaching the 2017 season of the Franklin County Farmer’s Market, currently held in Hampton from May through October, on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 5-7 p.m.
     Various groups were represented at the meeting, including vendors, the Franklin County Farm Bureau, community members and Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, an organization promoting local food production in North Iowa.
     The consensus of the group was that baked goods, rather than produce mainly drive the Franklin County Farmer’s Market, and that very few purchase produce from vendors, even at competitive prices against Fareway. Coupled with a lack of community support in the form of turnout, and the market faces a challenge for future years. While the group agreed that community members probably feel that a farmer’s market is a good idea, that support doesn’t equate to turn out.
