A fire in the 400 block of Third Avenue Southeast left a family of six homeless last Thursday in Hampton.

The Hampton Fire Department responded to the blaze at around 4 p.m. Officials suspect old wiring in the attic ignited insulation and gradually spread, according to Chief Kent Wilkinson. Firefighters spent roughly one hour spraying water on the roof and inside house before smoke stopped billowing from the residence.

Some members of the family were home at the time of the fire, but since it was isolated to the attic, Wilkinson said they were unaware anything was burning until it had grown significantly.
