CAL is ready for some barnyard fun next school year. Late last month, the school welcomed a number of pigs, goats and chickens as part of its Farm to School program. The program is designed to educate students on how food begins at the farm or garden and ends up on their plates.
Work began on the barns to house the animals last year. Students worked with Hamp-ton-Dumont-CAL building trades instructor David Harms to measure, cut, nail and paint the structures.
Now, the barns are complete and the furry and feathered friends are on the grounds. CAL Farm to School advisor Steve Lane said the school selected those animals because of their size and easiness of maintenance.
“Those are smaller animals and they’re easier to take care of,” Lane said, “but we’re not ruling out adding something else.”
