Last week, Dr. Dalton Miller began his full-time career as an optometrist at Wood Vision Clinic in Hampton.
Miller, a Warsaw, Ill. native, laughs a little when he thinks about his decision to become an optometrist. Never having worn glasses or contacts, Miller said he hadn’t visited an eye doctor his whole life. But a couple years into his college career, Miller got the idea to pursue optometry from a friend who had a positive experience with an eye doctor near his hometown. Miller asked the eye doctor if he could observe and that’s all he needed to find his desired career.
“I learned a little of the day to day of optometry,” he said. “I was hooked the first time was there.”
After graduating from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Miller attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. Miller said he first met Dr. Jarod Wood and Dr. Amanda Wood while they were visiting Southern College as part of a “State Day” where doctors from different states talk with students about optometry in their respective states. Last fall, Miller said he heard Wood Vision was looking for a new eye doctor to replace Dr. Craig Semler, who retired last month.
