Dennis Bell, 92

Dennis Bell, 92 died Monday, August 7th at the Sheffield Care Center where he resided the past
two years.
 
Dennis was greeted in heaven by his son, David Paul Bell, 61, who passed away two hours before his father in a motorcycle accident. 
 
Visitation and a time for condolences for both Denny and David will be held on Friday, August 11 at St. Patrick’s Church, Hampton, from 5:00-7:00 with a wake service for Denny beginning at 7:00. A funeral mass for Denny will be held at St. Patrick’s on Saturday, August 12 at 10:00. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton.
 
Denny was born in Clarion, Iowa, April 29th, 1931, to Constance (Bent) and Samual Bell. He graduated from Clarion High in 1949.  He went to work for NW Bell Telephone Co and was employed for 41 years.  He served his country from 1952 to 1954 in the Airborne Division of the Army as a paratrooper.
On June 1st, 1957, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane (Jan) Broadie at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, Iowa.  They made their home in Hampton, Iowa where they lived and raised their children for 65 years.
 
Denny was an avid fisherman and made several trips through the years to Canada with his wife and good friends.  At retirement, his children gave him his first membership to the Hampton Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf for many years.  His greatest joy was watching his children and grandchildren participate in various sporting events.  
 
He served on the Hampton City Council for 14 years.  He was a member of the St Patrick's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Denny and Jan spent 13 winters at South Padre Island, Texas where they met many new and lasting friendships.
 
We appreciate all who reached out to our family with sympathy, friendship, and love.  You are our greatest treasure.  We know Denny is enjoying his new life in the presence of God.
 
Denny will be greatly missed by his wife, Jan of 66 years and his 6 children Connie (Gregg) Horsman of Urbandale, daughter-in-law, Julia Bell of Santa Cruz CA, Diane (Scott) Schmelzer of Wichita, KS, Debra Gray (Jim Rhodes) of Urbandale, Mary (Nick) Schulz of Sheffield and Paul Bell (Hallie Hamilton) of Iowa City, 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren (with 2 more on the way!).
 
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sandra Sandmaier, and son David Paul. 
 
We appreciate all who reached out to our family with sympathy, friendship, and love. We are especially grateful for the wonderful care given to Denny at the Sheffield Care Center. We know Denny is enjoying his new life in the presence of God.
