Complete reconstruction of the Hampton Public Library’s curved brick wall will be delayed until officials can determine funding options, according to discussion at Monday’s city council workshop.
The wall was recently declared unfixable after engineers discovered the exterior bulge was greater than original measurements had indicated. The finding temporarily delayed restoration work and added a significant expense to the project, raising the overall price tag from $136,000 to $227,000.
“We’re in no man’s land right now,” said Mayor Brook Boehmler. “There’s plywood on those windows... We don’t know exactly what options are out there.”
The original wall renovations were part of a massive two-phase project planned for the library this year. Phase 1 would have reinforced the curved brick wall and added new windows, while Phase 2 will add a paved parking lot and courtyard on the east side of the building. The second phase will cost $226,000 and is being completely funded by the Hampton Public Library Foundation.
