A “bewildering” achievement

A lifetime of dedicated community service has paid off in a big way for Coulter’s Dennis Carlson.
The local volunteer and former conservation director will serve as Iowan of the Day on Aug. 18 at the Iowa State Fair. The award honors individuals who personify the greatness of Iowa with a strong work ethic, loyalty to helping others and an exceptional sense of community pride.
Carlson is Franklin County’s first Iowan of the Day recipient in the award’s 18-year history. He joins a long list of past winners like former Gov. Bob Ray.
“You can get honored for something locally, and that’s always great. But this is such a broader spectrum,” Carlson said. “You think to yourself, ‘Now come on, there’s gotta be someone better than me out there for this.’”
