Cleaning up crud in Franklin County

A new cleanup campaign hopes to crackdown on messy ditches and roadways throughout Franklin County this spring.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Engineer’s Office are joining forces to ramp up enforcement of County Ordinance No. 4.1. The ordinance sets guidelines for right-of-ways on rural roads, which have become filled with debris like machinery and rock piles in some areas of the county. The crackdown will make local ditches safer for both maintenance crews and travelers alike, officials say.

“Say a deer runs in front of you and you swerve and go in the ditch. If there’s nothing there, there’s little to no damage,” said Sheriff Larry Richtsmeier. “But if you hit a rock pile, now there’s significant damage or personal injury.”
