City to adhere to ADA guidelines when repairing streets, sidewalks

     The Hampton City Council met for its workshop Monday night and heard details about the state of Iowa's plans to enforce federal ADA regulations more vigorously, a move that potentially could reduce the amount of funds the city uses on street repairs and maintenance.      

     Hampton City Manager Ron Dunt told the council that federal American with Disabilities Act regulations mandate handicapped ramps at sidewalks intersections. The Iowa Department of Transportation has told cities and counties that they will be enforcing the federal laws more than in past years.

     "The Iowa DOT is going to strongly enforce ADA regulations when it comes to sidewalk ramps," Dunt said. "We need to re-do all sidewalk ramps for crosswalks."
