Brightly colored messages and pictures on the South Side Elementary sidewalks tell a story of compassion, respect and understanding.
Crisis Intervention Service (CIS) and the school last week teamed up for Chalk the Walk, a program in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month where students translate their understanding of respect towards others to a sidewalk full of chalk in front of the school.
Andrea DeGroote, Sexual Assault Outreach Advocate with CIS, said the project, part of the #IAsk campaign, aims to teach students consent.
“We want them to know you don’t touch without permission, you ask for permission if you want a hug or a handshake or anything,” she said. “We also want to show them that they have ownership of their own body.”
