The Hampton Police Department boosted its ranks this month with the addition of full-time Officer Yovan Cardenas. The Denison native started on Oct. 10 and has spent most of his time training with Capt. Mark Morrison.

"Right now they're showing me the ropes," said the new officer. “I’m learning about police codes, city nuisances and other stuff. Pretty much anything Captain Morrison is doing, I am."

Cardenas, 22, graduated from Iowa State University in May with degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology. He was originally an architectural engineering major, but ultimately switched after taking a criminal studies class his sophomore year. He said he was intrigued by the sociology of crime and liked studying its social implications.
