CAL set to open for 2013-14 school year next Wednesday

     Yet another year is upon the CAL Community School District, and second-year superintendent Dwight Widen is excited for a handful of changes both big and small.

     Topping the list are a few important switches to the school's security system. Keyless entry points will be added to the building in Latimer and will cut the entrance points down from 30 to nine. Widen said the added measures are needed to ensure the security of both students and staff.

     Unbeknownst to some in the community, the CAL school building was put under lockdown three times during the 2012-13 school year. Widen said being so close to Interstate 35 creates added hazards to the school because out-of-town threats can pass through the district's territory quite freely.
