CAL plans tax hike with new budget

     Residents in the CAL Community School District would see a noticeable property tax increase under next year’s budget proposal.
     The levy would climb to $13.36 per $1,000 of property valuation if the school board approves the budget at its meeting April 11. That’s an increase of more than a dollar from the previous year, which is partially attributed to declining enrollment and low state funding, according to Superintendent Steve Lane.
     “[Lawmakers] all tell us that we’ve gotten increases for six years,” he said. “Well, if they’ve given us $10 the year before, it’s technically an increase. So they can say that, but they really haven’t done much good.”
