A key player in Hampton’s mission to build a multi-sport recreation complex in town told his story to city officials Wednesday.
Bob Hellman, founder of Build Our Ballpark, which has helped build and refurbished 49 fields in 10 years, stopped by Hampton City Council Chambers to talk about his vision and offer suggestions how he thinks the city might be successful in its mission.
“I’m a baseball guy and I’ll readily admit it,” Hellman said of why he founded Build Our Ballpark. “It’s something I got into as a kid, fell in love with it and never lost that love.”
Hellman said the mission started in Waterloo, where Build Our Ballpark has since helped build or restore 18 ball fields. In that time, baseball and softball participation has grown from 1,100 students to 1,900.
“That shows you what a good field will do for your kids,” he said.
