Branstad talks Medicaid in Mason City

Gov. Terry Branstad acknowledged concerns about his impending Modernized Medicaid initiative during a town hall meeting last Wednesday in Mason City.
     The state is currently in the process of contracting out administrative responsibility of Medicaid services to four private companies. It is expected that the four Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) will be able to find $51 million in savings in the state’s $4.2 billion Medicaid budget.
     The governor’s opening remarks centered around economic incentives to bring businesses to Iowa and concern about grain prices for this year’s harvest, but discussion quickly turned towards privatized Medicaid once the floor was open to audience questions.
     “From our perspective, the Medicaid program is unsustainable,” said Branstad.
