A bald eagle is recovering following a scare with lead poisoning that left the bird wounded and vulnerable near Latimer.
The 4-year-old female eagle was rescued earlier this month by Jason Gooder and Logan Van Dyke of Franklin County Conservation. She was lethargic and unable to fly when the two men arrived at the scene, and she also had an injured left wing.
“We thought she was dead when we got there,” said Gooder. “We thought it was going to be more of a recovery effort than a rescue.”
The bird was transported to the Wildlife Care Clinic at Iowa State University for X-rays and other tests.
