Barkema grants benefit H-D, CAL programs

Gone are the days where CAL students learned about the stars and constellations through paper punch-out sheets.
Thanks to a $900 grant through the Foster and Evelyn Barkema Charitable Trust, CAL was able to purchase 10 Orion telescopes.
CAL fourth grade teacher Bill Parker said students will use the telescopes to get an as-close-as-possible look at the constellations, stars, gal-axies and planets.
Before, Parkers said the students would draw the con-stellations on paper, poke out the holes and shine a light through the paper to illumi-nate the star formations on the ceiling. Now, he said, stu-dents can get a real-time look at what’s above.
