Law enforcement officers were justified to use lethal force in a standoff with a suicidal man last month in Iowa Falls, according to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

Leighton Fitz, 25, was gunned down outside his Iowa Falls home following an armed standoff with regional law enforcement agencies on April 17. Five officers fired their weapons after Fitz reached for a handgun, killing him instantly and ending the threat. Hardin County Attorney Randall Tilton asked the state attorney general’s office to investigate the case due to a potential conflict of interest.

Fitz attended school at CAL and was buried in the Hampton City Cemetery, according to his obituary.
