Poultry show cancellations a tough call, but the right one

The dreaded bird flu virus claimed more victims last week, but this time it was poultry shows at county fairs across the state.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture’s decision to cancel all live bird exhibitions, poultry sales and other events was less than shocking – the highly-pathogenic virus has showed no signs of stopping during its devastating tear across the state this spring. The department’s order was a logical step towards reducing the risk of additional infections, even though it might seem like small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.
So far more than 25 million birds have been affected at poultry facilities in 15 counties during the past two months. Of that massive sum, only five backyard flocks totaling around 850 chickens and ducks have been affected. However, that number would no doubt grow significantly during county fair season. Poultry barns at fairgrounds are typically rather cozy structures, which could lead to widespread infection as birds from different flocks move in during fair time.
This would have a devastating effect on backyard flocks statewide. The virus has basically stayed in the northern half of the state so far, but increased interaction at county fairs, and later the Iowa State Fair, would heighten odds for additional cases further south. The last thing we need to do is shoot ourselves in the foot by spreading the disease even more.
Despite all this sound logic, kids in 4-H and FFA still have to deal with the disappointment of cancelled poultry projects. They put a lot of work into their chickens, ducks, turkeys and other birds, and it’s unfortunate the virus had to spoil it. However, this will prove to be a learning experience for these kids. Biosecurity and the threat of disease are a huge priority in the agriculture industry. The state is experiencing that reality on a widespread level right now and it will most likely leave an impression on Iowa’s youth.
Nobody wanted to cancel poultry shows at Iowa’s many great county fairs, but there was really no other choice. Sometimes you just have to play with the hand you’re dealt. The bird flu virus is an incredibly volatile disease that is going to need a united effort to defeat.

Sum-sum-summertime!

With school out and Memorial Day behind us, we can turn our full attention to a stacked summertime lineup here in Franklin County.
There’s plenty of things going on to keep you busy during these next three months. The ever-popular Tuesday on the Town celebration returns June 2 for the next five Tuesdays in June. The event once again features a great lineup of live entertainment and retail vendors in Hampton’s Band Shell Park. Also featured is the Hampton Municipal Band, which is sure to please visitors of all ages.
Of course, there’s plenty more going on here this summer. The Franklin County Fair, Summerfest and many other great events will keep residents buzzing over the next few months. Don’t forget our area baseball and softball teams who will hit ball diamonds throughout north central Iowa very soon.
Have a great summer. Enjoy it while you can, because the leaves will start turning before we know it!
