Hampton Public Works Director Doug Tarr is superstitious when it comes to the winter snow removal season.

"So far, so good. We're gonna keep knocking on wood, we're gonna keep our fingers crossed that we finish nice," he said.

A relatively mild winter has kept Hampton's snowplows off the streets for the most part during the past two months. Tarr said the white stuff just hasn't fallen in amounts great enough to warrant very many full-blown snow emergencies, but he isn't complaining. The city's $13,500 snow removal budget has been kept in check during this year's winter lull.

That’s not to say Hampton's maintenance crews have been sitting on their hands in December and January.
