Special session needed to protect middle-class Iowans
This year, Senate Democrats fought long and hard for education, health care, jobs and public safety initiatives that will strengthen Iowa’s middle class. We hoped to accomplish much more, but after five months of negotiating, we opted for compromise over gridlock.

Iowa’s great quality of life is bolstered by arts, culture and recreation. These opportunities are important to community development, enriching local amenities and attracting young professionals. In addition, they create jobs, draw investments and stimulate the economy through tourism.

The recently completed 2015 session required compromise on important efforts to grow Iowa’s middle class, but this year also saw bipartisan successes. In particular, the Senate approved many initiatives to help vulnerable Iowans.

Memorial Day was observed on Monday. The history of Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began three years after the end of the Civil War when Maj. Gen. John A. Logan ordered his posts to decorate graves in 1868.
